Death, Dreams and the unconcious mind!!!

Good afternoon interweb, and how are you this cold shitty drab and dreary October afternoon?
I would like today to discuss a couple of things with you, the first would be Death, as in the incarnation of, and his fundamental ability to motivate one.
The other thing I would like to discuss with you is the reason we dream, I do not expect to come to any solid conclusions on either of these subjects but that is why I ramble away to you. It sometimes makes things appear clearer in the foggy  depths and dark recesses that are my mind.
So without further ado let us begin. As many of you are aware I stopped smoking on the 12th of February this year. This did nothing to lower my blood pressure and I think it probably increased it as I do not suffer fools gladly at the best of times and I appear to be a fool magnet of some sort.
You see Death has on many occasions followed me about and tried to pounce on me but to date has missed and ended up in ball of bones, scythe and cape looking like an idiot.
I'm sure that he had decided to try stealth tactics on me next and hence the high blood pressure which really was very high, in the 200’s over something else ridiculous, I went to the doctors and found out that I could either take tablets, exercise or die.

You see a lot of people ask me why I go to the gym 5 times a week and don’t I find it boring. Well actually no I don’t find it boring, you see death is in fact a great motivator, much more so than some coloured dude with a stupid cap on glasses and brightly coloured Lycra shorts.
Go to the gym and exercise or feel the cold clammy grip of Death on your shoulder.  OK So once again death ends up in a ball of cape, bones and scythe but he really did get close this time.
Right then now the other thorny question I'm dealing with today. Why do we dream?
There are many theories to this one, none of which has been proved or disproved to date. I will share a few of these with you before giving my own views on the subject.

The Evolutionary Theory:- This theory says that we dream in order to practice our fight or flight reaction. It may just be me but I find that in a lot of dreams  You can find yourself naked or running, flying, falling, fighting, in a situation that needs a fast reaction or response. Some Finnish bloke did some research and discovered that when the body is experiencing REM sleep (the time in sleep when we dream) the brain fires in similar ways as it does when it's specifically threatened for survival. In addition to that, the part of the brain that practices motor activity (running, punching) fires increasingly during REM sleep, even though the limbs are still.

Dreams create wisdom:- Well this one cant be true as I dream a lot and don’t really show many signs of sageness at all.
However the theory goes that as we sleep our unconscious mind takes over and sorts through all the shit of the day. If we tried to retain all the images and information that our daily lives throw at us we would soon overload our conscious mind. So the unconscious mind kinda sorts out what needs to be retained and what can be thrown out with the trash.

We dream to forget:- Francis Crick (who co-discovered the structure of DNA) and Graeme Mitchison put forth a famously controversial theory about dreams in 1983 when they wrote that "we dream in order to forget."
They meant that the brain is like a machine that gets in the groove of connecting its data in certain ways and that those thinking pathways might not be the most useful for us. But, when we sleep, the brain fires much more randomly. And it is this random scouring for new connections that allows us to loosen certain pathways and create new, potentially useful, ones. Dreaming is a shuffling of old connections that allows us to keep the important connections and dump the inefficient links. A good analogy here is the defragmentation of a computer's hard drive: Dreams are a reordering of connections to streamline the system.

Dreams are like psychotherapy:- Another variation of why we dream is that our dreams allow our unconscious mind to take over and put the days difficult situations etc into pictures, a scene where we can look at the different ways in which we could handle things without actually having to take the risks in real life where the conscious mind may well repress our actions as it is much more constrained to social etiquette. Almost like a nightly brain doctors couch except without the cardigan or sandals.

It is my belief that there are a few bits really that can be taken from all of the above. I certainly believe that the unconscious mind has a lot to do with our dreams and that if we are struggling with a decision for instance that our unconscious mind works on the problem in our dreams to find the answer. This theory can be seen in practice when people are told to “sleep on it”. I have found this actually works surprisingly well. Dreaming is very much like hypnosis in many ways which is probably why the unconscious mind plays such a big part. Maybe our dreams are just random firings of neurons and they mean nothing at all. I do know that the unconscious mind is a very powerful thing and as we understand it better we become much more “aware” and if this awareness is opened up in our dreams then it can only be a good thing.
Anyway interweb, thank you for listening to my ramblings for another day. I'm off for a cappuccino.
Peace out yall, THE BAGSTAXXX

Autumn, MW3 and Goldfish!!!!

Well hello interweb and how are we today? Normal service has been resumed and I'm back to being a bit grumpy.
Ive been out to one of the reservoirs near where we live today to try and get some shots of the autumnal colours reflected in the water but the devil once again farts in my face by making the wind blow too hard thereby stirring all the water up so no nice reflections.
Instead I went and got a few shots of the old pumping station.

On my return home I found that the sensor cleaning that I had done was done very well, not a dust bunny in sight, hoorah.
On a grumpy note, MW3 is only 12 days away from release and I should in theory get mine a day early. So why the grumpiness I hear you ask, well the developers (a US based company) have once again given their country all the bonuses that it is possible to get with up to 48 hours double xp from pre ordering and from purchasing snacks and drinks that have redeemable codes on them. Only available in the US of A, in the UK we get 4 hours of double xp.  A long time gaming friend of mine called John (Gunkin or heartlessnthed) has a theory that goes like this.
“Gary its possible that one of the developers had a girlfriend or wife that was taken from him by a guy with that slick English accent and hes hell bent on throwing his COD branded cock in the entire UK just a theory but i think i might on to something”
I think Big G may be on to something there, anyway all  that aside I do hope that they have sorted the connection issues out on this incarnation of the franchise so that it is actually playable.

The previous version of MW, MW2 has once again been hacked and permanent uav’s are in just about every lobby now on public matches so the only real practice that is available is on spec ops.
In other news did you know that if a gold fish is found laying on it’s side in it’s tank (fish tank) it is probably due to it being constipated by over feeding. You see gold fish only have stomachs about the same size as their eyes which are very small, now you think of the size of the fishy goodness flakes that you chuck in the tank every day. They stuff and gorge till they become constipated and this in turn affects their swim bladder and over they go. They aren’t dead and will usually recover in 2-3 days so please don’t go flushing them.
Can’t decide where to go next on the planet, choices so far are Panama to the amazingly secluded water villa, Costa Rica, Mozambique or back to the Maldives.  Either way I better start saving as none of the above seem to come in on the cheap side.
Anyway interweb, enough of my ramblings for today, farewell and fare winds, Dasvidaniya

Land Sharks, Urban Exploring and an absolute rule!!!

Hello interweb, Ive had an uncomfortable few days of thought and reflection.
It happens occasionally but I soon snap out of it.
I want today to bring you some images that I took whilst in Aruba that you will not find in any of the brochures.
That is mainly because they do not promote the Casino’s which the whole island seems to be geared towards. Even the local people call them the “Land Sharks”.
Whilst there I decided to do a spot of urban exploring as it is one of my past times and as I have got older it has got a bit easier. I can walk onto most places these days that are fenced off and have signs saying no trespassing with ease and no bother from anybody. At 42 wearing a hard hat, boots a big yellow coat and holding a professional camera nobody thinks I'm a trespasser.  (not that I did that in Aruba but you know what I mean)
Away from the resorts and the beaches there is another side to the Happy island, it is not so happy.
When I was exploring I felt a nervous tension and an underlying fear about the place that I could not put my finger on. After speaking with a couple of locals, despite the language problem, most of the problems appear to boil down to politics. Hmmm, a bit like home then but without the sunshine.

I would now bid you farewell for today interweb but will leave you with this thought.
The Universe is very, very big, and  it has some extremely strict rules.
Rule number one: Nothing lasts forever.
Not you or your family or your house or your planet or the sun.
 It is an absolute rule.
Therefore when someone says that their love will never die, it means that their love is not real, for everything that is real dies.
I told you id been thinking again, normal service will resume in due coarse.
Peace out y'all, THE BAGSTAXXX

R.I.P. Marco Simoncelli

Hello interweb, it is with a sad and heavy heart I write to you today after the terrible events of yesterday. I do not feel much like writing a great deal today so will just leave a few thoughts.
On Sunday 23rd October, during the MotoGP race at the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit, San Carlo Honda Gresini's Italian rider Marco Simoncelli suffered a serious accident in which he received critical injuries.
Rest in peace Marco Simoncelli, you were one of the brightest most exciting riders to compete in the Moto GP championship in years, you shook things up and reminded the old school that no win was a given. Your talent and presence will im sure be missed by many.

 Peace out Yall, THE BAGSTAXXX

Interweb, dictators and darkness in the minds of men!!!

Hello interweb, I trust you are well today and not having an argument with British Telecom again. It really does put me out of sorts when I cannot use you. I managed perfectly well before I was introduced to you and now I find it difficult to exist without you, or at least without the knowledge that you are there and working just in case I need you. It’s pretty much the same with mobile phones of course. The youth of today may find it difficult to believe that I made it half way through my life before owning a mobile phone.
Right then, With events unfolding in Libya over the past 48 hours I have been thinking again. Reports from Libya have been saying that Muammar Gaddafi has been killed after National Transitional Council fighters overran loyalist defences in the  Libyan leader's hometown and final stronghold of Sirte. But questions remained over the circumstances of Gaddafi's death as footage appeared to show he had been captured alive, following an apparent attempt to flee the besieged coastal city in a convoy which came under fire from French warplanes and a US drone aircraft.(Typical, the French attack as they are fleeing)
Other footage showed Gaddafi's lifeless and bloodied body being dragged along a road.

"We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Muammar Gaddafi has been killed," Mahmoud Jibril, the de facto Libyan prime minister, told reporters on Thursday in Tripoli, the capital.
Asked what would be done with Gaddafi's body, he said: "It doesn't make any difference, as long as he disappears".
You see it seems to me that history has thrown up a bit of a paradox with some of the leaders that have emerged in this world, It is a fact that every dictator that has climbed to power on the ladder of free speech. Immediately on attaining power each dictator has suppressed all free speech except his own.
Granted Gaddafi came to power in the coup detat of 1969 on the first of September in a bloodless take over. People were happy at the time but soon things started to go downhill.
Now that Gaddafi is dead we must look at what he is to be replaced with and will it really be a better, safer,  more humane leadership. There is still much darkness in the minds of men and we would do well not to forget that fact.
Both liberty and equality are among the primary goals pursued by human beings throughout many centuries; but total liberty for wolves is death to the lambs, total liberty of the powerful, the gifted, is not compatible with the rights to a decent existence of the weak and the less gifted. I really must stop thinking . it keeps me awake at night. Anyway, that's enough thought for one day. I shall now go back to the mind numbing task of captioning and uploading photographs to picture agencies, or will I, I can hear the PS3 calling and I'm home alone.

Peace out y'all, THE BAGSTAXXX

Gaddafi, Katrina and Kindle!!!!

Good afternoon interweb, and a very interesting one indeed. The news tickers are awash with news of Gaddafi’s capture whilst the Libyan television is saying he has been shot in both legs and died from his injuries.
Either way another tyrant toppled, now we just have to wait for the bleeding heart liberals to come out and start denouncing it all.
Any way, nothing will ruin my day today. On my way to the gym this bright, crisp autumnal day I was stuck in traffic whilst listening to radio 2 when Katrina and the waves came on “Im walking on sunshine woooooaaaaao!”

I'm happily tapping my hands on the steering wheel and singing along at the top of my lungs, this cacophony must have attracted the attention of one of my fellow travellers as I looked sideways alongside my truck was a pretty young lady doing exactly the same thing, our eyes met and in unison we both bellowed “IM WALKING ON SUNSHINE WOOOOOOAAO” with smiles as wide as a cricket bat. It was a fleeting moment where age, religion, sex, political views etc were all thrown out with the trash and two people shared a moment. We both drove away in different directions smiling away and I must admit it has made my day.
I can’t even find anything to be grumpy about today which will make my blog post rather short I'm afraid. No really, I honestly hand on heart can find nothing to grump about. I'm sure by the end of the day ill have chapters to bleat on about and will update you all in due course.
In other news, my iphone is still working and it has been dropped 3 times so far, good job I got it the griffin.  I'm finding new things out with it every day. Yesterday I discovered that when I visit my blog it gives me the option of reading it in a reader, a bit like a kindle page thing. Oh here we go, kindle, I fekking hate kindle’s. If you are going to read a book fekking buy one or borrow one. The whole point of reading a book is the experience of feeling it’s weight, the touch and feel of the paper, even the smell as you turn the page. NO NO NO NO NO, i will not be grumpy today.
Right I'm off to see how much my 3GS has sold for on ebay
Peace out y'all, THE BAGSTAXXX
